The year was 1799, and the science of criminology was still very
primitive. Torture devices like the iron maiden were still in use, and there
was one man in the city of New York that demanded that such devices were inhumane
and not productive. His name was Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp). He was sent to
a small village upstate called Sleepy Hollow to investigate the murders of three
people, two men and a woman. The peoples bodies were found headless. He was
to find to perpetrator and bring him back to face New York's "good justice".
Once he arrived, he found that the town was very quiet and non-active on the
outside, but was trying to keep up appearances and good spirits on the inside,
that is the inside of the richest farmer in this village, Baltus Van Tassel.
Baltus had a beautiful daughter named Katrina (Christina Ricci), and she was
being courted by a young man by the name of Brom (Casper Van Dien). On the night
that Ichabod arrived, they were holding a party. He meet everyone and was informed
of the situation in the Hollow. According to everyone in the town, the murders
were being administered by a headless Hessian that was murdered twenty years
ago. He was hired to keep the colonist under wraps. Unlike his other cohorts,
he loved the thrill of battle too much. He would rage in on black steed with
his sword unsheathed and chop off heads where he could find them. He even filed
down his teeth to make his appearance more fierce. But he did finally meet Death
in the western woods of Sleepy Hollow. He was chased there and ran into two
children. Soldiers found him and managed to beat him. As a final blow, they
cut off his head with his own sword and buried him in the western woods. Now
no one will dare venture into those woods. Ichabod refused to believe such nonsense
and insisted that the villain was "of flesh and blood, and I will discover him."
After a while, he did. A few more murders were committed and Ichabod was still
convinced that the murdered was alive, until one night he met the headless horseman
himself. After that, he was convinced that he had to go out to the western woods
and find out why the horseman was killing. Well, if I tell you anymore, the
secrets of the story will be given away. So sorry, I know I do this a lot, but
I just can't resist torturing you people! It's just so fun! :) This movie is
possibly the best movie that Tim Burton has ever done. Staring such talents
as Johnny Depp ("Edward Scissorhands" and "Ed Wood"), Christina Ricci ("Adams
Family" and "Pecker"), Jeffrey Jones("Beetlejuice"), Ian McDiarmid ("Star Wars
Episode One: The Phantom Menace, Episode Four: A New Hope" you get the idea),
Christopher Walken ("Batman Returns" and "The Prophesy"), and one great stunt
man and villain, Ray Park ("Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace"). And
they all did a wonderful job. Tim did a great job of directing, and even though
he did change the story a bit, he made it into a new classic. I swear, that
man can do anything. And the music is done by the simply wonderful Danny Elfman.
This score threatens to be his best, even better then "Edward Scissorhands",
which he himself acclaimed his best score so far. The music in "Sleepy Hollow"
is so haunting, and yet so beautiful. "Edward Scissorhands" was heavenly, but
the only way I can describe the score to "Sleepy Hollow" is orgasmically heavenly.
I couldn't believe how different it was, it really added a dimension to that
film that any other music would have kept hidden. I have to stop myself there
though, otherwise I'll go on forever about the music. I just have to say that
I loved it and if you haven't seen it yet, or if your in another country that
hasn't gotten it yet (if you read this, Loki, I'm referring to you, and I am
so sorry you have to wait longer then the rest of us), then see it whenever
you get the chance!
