Sequels are always hard; you have to balance catering to fans of the first one, make sure new viewers aren't lost, and make it original. Final Destination 2 definitely caters to fans of the original; the whole movie is pretty much more of the same, but gorier. And this isn't necessarily a bad thing, assuming you liked the first one, which I did. The basic plot is the same: group of people avoid dying in horrible disaster, and now Death wants them dead. They are lead by someone who has premonitions (A.J. Cook this time around), and are populated by skeptics, believers, and people you know are going to die. I didn't think the movie was scary at all, but it was entertaining. There are characters killed that I didn't think would die, and they definitely pushed the gore to a new level. Of course, it's really nothing that hasn't been seen in half a dozen horror movies by now, but that's Hollywood for you.
Now on to the plot; it goes a little something like this: Devon Sawa AJ Cook saves a bunch of people from a plane crash car pileup, and Death tries to kill them in the reverse order that they would have died. In many gruesome, unusual ways, of course. I have to applaud the creators for finding some interesting ways of killing the characters off; most are nothing too new, but there are one or two that make you go “Woah”. The special effects are well done, as you would expect from the production value of the film. The acting is passable, nothing horrendous, but then the actors are challenged very much.
So if you liked the first movie, and want a little more of the same, with mostly new faces (Ali Larter is the only returning cast member... which may be reason enough for some people to watch this), and a little more gore, then this is your movie. If you're looking for a great I-can't-wait-tell-my-friends-about-this-movie movie, then put down the box and rent something else.
