You are newly weds that are having your honeymoon at your newly finished house.
You just want to spend your time working around the house and with each other.
You take a trip to the store and end up falling through a bridge on your way
back to your beautiful house. Somehow you find yourselves back at your house
soaked from the cold river water. After a few minutes, you soon realize that
you are dead and that strange city people are moving in to your house and destroying
it to suit their tastes. How would you feel? Well, Barbara (Geena Davis) and
Adam (Alec Baldwin) are the dead married couple, and they are rather pissed
that strange city people are destroying their happy home that was just they
way they wanted it. The Deitz (Lydia / Winona Ryder, Chuck / Jeffrey Jones,
and Delia / Catherine O'Hara) dismember the house as quickly as they can (actually,
it's more the work of Otho / Glen Shadix, and Delia) and make it into some abstract
version of what it once was (frankly, I liked what they did to the house). Barbara
and Adam try to scare the Deitz out of the house but soon realize that "people
tend to ignore the strange and unusual" as according to the Handbook for the
Recently Deceased Anyway, they are determined to get the family out of their
house so they go to their case worker, Juno (Sylvia Sidney). She informs them
that they have to get the family out of their house on their own, and to stay
away from a certain bio-exorcist that lives in their model of the city. They
don't listen well and call on him anyway. Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) promptly
proves that he is vulgar and has no concern for the living. During this time,
Barbara and Adam have befriended the daughter of the family, Lydia. She can
see them because she herself is..."strange and unusual". After an attempt to
get the family out with a song and dance at a dinner party, Beetlejuice tries
his best, and does a pretty descent job, but no cigar. Anyway... the family
is now very happy that their house is haunted and thinks that they can make
money off of this (except for Lydia of course). They call on Otho again (he's
not just an interior designer, he's a spiritual medium too!) and they decide
to do an exorcism of the house for their rich friends. This ends up to be quite
a bit of a failure and Beetlejuice is released by Lydia to save Barbara and
Adam. He gets rid of everyone and tries to marry Lydia. Well, to keep a long
story from getting any longer he fails and everything goes back to normal. The
two families divide the house up and live together happily ever after, and Beetlejuice
gets his head shrunk. A big congrats goes out to Michael Keaton for being such
a wonderful screwball. But we just can't forget to thank the great duo of Tim
Burton and Danny Elfman. Together, they could probably do anything!
